Choosing Between Self-Storage And Portable Container

by Irma Soto

If you need extra storage for your business, you can either opt for a portable container or a self-storage facility. Both options have their strong points and drawbacks, so your selection will depend on your exact circumstances. Here are some of the factors you should use in your decision making:

Ease of Relocation

If you plan to move or you are likely to move in the near future, then you are better off with a portable container. This is especially true if you plan on moving more than once; a portable container would be more convenient than a self-storage unit. This is because once you have packed your items in the portable container, it can be moved to your new location without a further fuss. It's also convenient for packing, where the container is delivered to your premises, you stuff it with your items, and then it is transported as desired. With a self-storage facility, you will have to go to the facility, retire your items, arrange for storage in your new location, and then transport the items.

Availability of Space on Your Premises

A typical portable storage container can be a dozen feet long and high. This means you need ample space on your premises to host the container. Even if you aren't planning to have it permanently on your premises, you still need adequate space for placing the container when it is delivered to your place for packing. Unfortunately, many people who need extra storage usually don't have large empty spaces on their premises. Even if you plan on using your side street, you should first confirm that the local laws allow you to do that, and for how long.

Accessibility of the Stored Items

Lastly, you also need to consider how accessible your stored items are since both storage options (portable containers or self-storage facilities) have different levels of accessibility. For example, if you need round-the-clock accessibility, then you are better off using a portable container that can be delivered and stored on your premises (assuming you have space). A self-storage facility, especially if it is a short distance from your premises, may be difficult to access all the time, even if the facility allows 24-hour access. Therefore, portable containers are usually best for those who need to access their stored items all the time.

Analyze your unique circumstances and determine the storage option that serves your needs best. The good news is that many storage companies like Attic Pantry Storage offer many types of storage, so you can talk with a facility manager to help you with the decision.
